Prepare for your Trip

We feel that it's important to carefully plan your trip and to make your days in Chicago a little easier we've generated this convenient planning checklist and packing guide.


  • Carry on bag for medications and essential items.
  • Pajamas soft, with button or zip front opening.
  • 2 or 3 comfortable outfits that are soft and have zip or button front tops.
  • Under garments.
  • Personal hygiene items.
  • Slippers or comfortable shoes.
  • Personal entertainment items (music, books on tape, movies).
  • Personal items that make you smile (stuffed animals, Bible, family pictures, etc.).
  • A list of important phone numbers that include family and friends.
  • A camera so you can record your experience.
  • If you wear a wig, you may not be able to wear it home.
  • A loose fitting hat or cap may be used.
  • A computer to keep in touch with friends.
  • Remember comfort before fashion is the key to clothes selection.
  • Your surgical success kit including the video program. You will need it.
  • DO NOT BRING jewelry or other valuable items you will not use.
  • Cash and credit cards.
  • Journal to keep track of your days, including medications, foods and thoughts.

Absolutely, Positively Do Not Forget

  • Get your medical clearance completed and returned to Dr. Zukowski.
  • No medical clearance equals no surgery.
  • Stop taking prohibited medications no less than 14 days prior to surgery.
  • Failure to stop in the time specified could be hazardous to your health.
  • Stop using all tobacco products no less than 21 days prior to surgery
  • If you are still using tobacco, your surgery will be cancelled.
  • Finalize travel and hotel arrangements early. 30 days prior to surgery is not too soon.
  • Do not forget your caregiver in your travel plans.
  • Arrange for a caregiver (relative, friend, spouse or Compassionate Care).


  • Vicodin (generic Hydrocodone)
  • Darvocet-N 100 (generic Propoxyphene)
  • Nasosylate/Acetaminophen or Tylenol # 3 (generic Acetaminophen with codeine)
  • Medrol Dose Pack (generic Methylprednisolone 4 mg)
  • Famvir 125mg / 250mg / 500mg tablets (no generic exists at this time)
  • Keflex 500mg (generic Cephalexin)
  • Valium 5mg / 10mg (generic Diazopam)
  • 1% Pred-Forte Opthalmic Solution (generic prednisolone AC 1%)

Medical Supplies

  • Refresh Celluvisc Lubricant Eye Drops or Refresh Plus Lubricant Eye Drops
  • Lacrilube Lubricant Eye Ointment or Refresh PM Lubricant Eye Ointment
  • Artificial Tears
  • Tylenol (generic Acetaminophen)
  • Non Perishable Foods (No MSG, Nitrates or High Salt Content)
  • Soups
  • Pastas
  • Oatmeal, Malt O Meal
  • Eggs
  • Canned Tuna
  • Quick Mac
  • Soft snack foods
  • Pudding
  • Jello
  • Yogurt
  • Canned fruit
  • Cottage cheese
  • Ice cream

Last Minute Tasks When You Arrive in Chicago

  • Call Dr. Zukowski’s office to confirm your arrival and to get any last minute instructions.
  • Purchase ice for cold packs.
  • Purchase perishables.
  • Request extra pillows, handicap style shower head and chair for your room.
  • Purchase any medication or supplies you did not bring but will need after surgery.
  • Get a good night’s rest the day before surgery.
  • Review the After Surgery care instructions video program (include your caregiver if with you)
  • Additional Over-The-Counter Supplies
  • Q-Tips To clean your incisions or inside of nose
  • Triple Antibiotic Ointment To keep your incisions moist
  • Hydrogen Peroxide To wash dried blood or scabs off your incisions or inside your nose.
  • Ocean Spray Nasal Spray To irrigate your nose after packing is removed.
  • Vaseline Petroleum Jelly To keep lips or tissues moist.
  • Lever 2000 or Dian Antibacterial Soap (Use right before surgery only).
  • Scope Mouthwash To keep your mouth clean in instances of intraoral incisions or
  • postoperatively.
  • 1% Hydrocortisone To get the red out of lasered or dermabraded areas.
  • Curel Original Formula Skin Lotion To keep your skin moist (no Vitamin E or Alphahydroxy
  • Acid).
  • Maalox or Mylanta Liquid Antacids Minimizes the change of postoperative reflux.
  • Zantac 75 Assists the above medication in patients prone to reflux or acid stomach.
