What is Electrolysis Hair Removal?
Electrolysis is the only method recognized by the FDA for permanent hair removal. It involves inserting a fine probe into the skin, then using shortwave radio or direct electric current in the hair follicles to damage them. This stops new hair from growing and causes existing hair to fall out.
What is Large Volume Electrolysis?
Large volume electrolysis allows the process to be completed in one or two sessions. You will be put under “twilight” sedation and numbing creams will be applied to your skin to make the procedure comfortable. This allows the technicians to cover a large area and work for a long period of time. Traditional electrolysis has to be performed in small amounts (such as 1 hour sessions) depending on the patient’s pain tolerance. This is a long process that can take years to complete. At the Zukowski Center, two technicians can perform 15 hours of treatment in one day by working side by side for 7.5 hours.
How Long Does Large Volume Electrolysis Take?
The amount and length of sessions needed depends on where and how much hair you are having removed. Because we do this on-site in our own spa, we are able to offer packages of up to 30 hours of electrolysis over a two day period. You can have two technicians working on you for 7.5 hours side by side on one day, then 7.5 hours side by side on the second day. You bring your own lunch and snacks and get bathroom breaks. This essentially equates to 30 weeks of electrolysis performed over 2 days!
What Areas Can be Treated with Large Volume Electrolysis?
Any area of your body that has hair can be treated with large volume electrolysis. We commonly treat the face, body, breast and genital areas for pre-op and post-op FFS and GRS surgeries. We also treat genetic females who dislike the amount of hair they have on their genitals, armpits, breasts, or face.
Is Large Volume Electrolysis Painful?
Traditional electrolysis can be very uncomfortable, as only topical numbing creams can be used and it entails multiple lengthy sessions. During large volume electrolysis at the Zukowski Center, we ensure your comfort by taking measures to relax you and prevent pain. Initially, you will be under light anti-pain and anti-anxiety medication, creating a pleasant relaxation during your first set of injections. Many patients nap during their treatment!
What Happens During Large Volume Electrolysis?
During large volume electrolysis, the doctor starts an IV and administers a light dose of anti-pain and anti-anxiety medication to immediately relax you and make you sleepy. They then inject local numbing medications into the nerves and areas around the nerves. Numbing cream is applied to your skin 15 minutes before injections. If you feel discomfort at some point, further local numbing medication or injections are used.
Once you are relaxed and numb, the process begins. Hair by har, the technicians insert a fine probe into every follicle. Alternating current and direct current are used together to create heat at the base of the follicle. This destroys the follicles so that new hair will not grow from them anymore.
After each session, you will receive iontophoresis (electrical stimulation therapy that aids in the repair of skin) and vibro-massage to minimize your skin’s reaction. You also have the option of getting a lymphatic drainage recovery massage to reduce the swelling. In this massage, we gently stretch and direct the skin to stimulate the local lymphatic system and promote regional body drainage.
Are the Results Instantaneous?
Electrolysis hair removal is a process that takes multiple sessions. Hair falls out and regrows in cycles, so multiple sessions are needed to treat all of the follicles. With traditional electrolysis, only a very small area can be treated during each session, meaning that complete removal of all unwanted hair can take years. At the Zukowski Center, you can have the equivalent of 30 weeks of electrolysis performed over 2 days.
Each session must be done 12 weeks apart, and you will need anywhere from 3-5 sessions to completely clear the targeted areas. Instead of years, you can achieve final results in a year or less!
Recovery
Electrolysis hair removal is not a surgical procedure, but it does cause minor trauma to the skin by using thermal heat transfer in your hair follicles. This will make your skin swell, form small scabs, and become irritated. The treated area will feel similar to a sunburn. You will need to avoid excessive sun exposure for a few days after treatment. You should also refrain from using makeup or harsh cleansers or chemicals on the treated skin for several days. The irritation will generally calm down within a couple of days. Scabs on the face typically heal within 3-4 days, and scabs on the rest of the body can take up to 2 weeks to disappear.
Electrolysis Hair Removal for Transgender Patients
Electrolysis hair removal can be done at any time in your transition timeline. Many MTF transgender patients choose to start the hair removal process before getting any feminization surgery, as facial hair is very visible and they often feel it is their most difficult barrier to passing as female. However, it cannot be done at the same time as surgical procedures – due to swelling, you must wait 2-4 months after surgery to have electrolysis hair removal done on the surgical site.
