What is Micrograft Hair Restoration?
Micrograft Hair Restoration is a type of hair transplant surgery in which donor hair is removed from one site on the head and implanted into an area where hair is missing or thinning. This actually puts new hair follicles under the skin in the new site and causes hair to grow there again.
It is often performed on genetic males who suffer from hair loss or on MTF transgender patients who wish to achieve a feminine hairline. It can be combined with facial feminization surgery, breast augmentation, and a brazilian butt lift for a complete outward gender transition.
Types of Hair Transplant Techniques
Our hair transplant technicians use two methods for micrograft hair restoration.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In this groundbreaking FUE hair transplant method, the technician determines the best hairs to use for a transplant. The hair is then harvested with single hair precision, retaining the donor area’s natural appearance. It is then densely transplanted into the areas where increased hair growth is desired. For MTF transgender patients, the technician will strategcially implant the hair in a way that yields a more feminine hairline.
Strip Method – Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)
The FUT hair restoration method is an older technique where a strip of your scalp is taken from the back of your head under local anesthesia. Dr. Zukowski then precisely closes the wound so that no gap in the hair is evident. Individual hair follicles are harvested from the strip and transplanted into the areas where increased hair growth is desired. For MTF transgender patients, the technician will strategcially implant the hair in a way that yields a more feminine hairline.

How Long Does Micrograft Hair Restoration Take?
The length of a micrograft hair restoration session depends on how much hair you are having grafted, but you can generally expect it to last 4-6 hours.
Is Micrograft Hair Restoration Painful?
For both hair transplant methods the scalp is numbed with local anesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Afterwards, most patients experience mild to moderate scalp pain that can be controlled with over the counter painkillers.
What are the Risks of Micrograft Hair Restoration?
Micrograft hair restoration is a minor procedure with the same risks as having a mole removed, such as a very minor risk of infection or scarring.
What is Recovery Like After Micrograft Hair Restoration?
You will be able to return to work and resume your normal activities within a few days. Most patients have no difficulty sleeping on the surgical area.
Micrograft Hair Restoration Results
It is important to note that the new hairs may fall out in 1-3 weeks after the procedure. This is normal and expected. The new follicles will keep producing hair, so you can expect to notice hair growth in 6 to 7 months, with final results taking up to 12 months.
